One of my favorite books to read aloud to a class is Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix. It’s about a teenaged girl whose pre-Civil War town is becoming overrun with diptheria. Then her mother pulls her aside and tells her it is NOT 1863 but 1993. The girl must leave the carefully isolated preserve (set up to be like a zoo) and enter the modern world to find the vaccine. She must master jeans, telephones, cars, and the media circus while fully conscious of the fact that the longer she takes to get back the more of her friends and family will die.
