The fantasy novel Cinder, by Marissa Meyer, grips you on the first page and doesn’t let go. It is a classic tale of an ill-treated stepdaughter with a evil stepmother and two stepsisters. Yes, there’s a handsome prince and a fancy ball, but before you assume you know the story let’s explore. In the first chapter you meet Cinder, a female Chinese cyborg mechanic. It is many years in the future, on Earth, and discrimination against cyborgs is rampant. The prince brings an android for Cinder to fix, and plague attacks the city. And yes, that’s just chapter one.

This is the first novel of the Lunar Chronicles, which I will absolutely continue reading. It’s a futuristic sci-fi Cinderella story. (The next book, Scarlet, is a revamped Little Red Riding Hood!)  Cinder, Prince Kai, the Lunar Queen Levana, and Dr. Eland are compelling characters. As they go forward to save Earth from the letumosis plague and invasion by the Lunars, I want to be there. Cinder learns shattering truths about herself by the end of this first book, and I can hardly wait to see how she, and the other characters, will respond to her now.

To avoid giving spoilers, I must stop there. In my head, I am screaming, “You must read this book now!”
