Love of Reading

animated_book02My earliest memories of reading include going to the library with my brother and my mom. I happily perused the children’s section, loading my arms with books. My mother painstakingly tried to find boys’ books about baseball. (In the sixties, there weren’t as many as there are now) I would settle in at home and read nonstop, finishing a dozen books in a few days.

Reading is a passion with me, but I don’t remember any required reading in elementary school that I immediately loved. As a teacher, that should have sent up a red flag long ago. If no teacher ignited my passion for reading, what did? How can I help my students crave books?

The basics of what I believe in my soul:

◊ Children love books they choose themselves, or are recommended by their friends.

◊  If they love the book, they will read more.

◊ More reading leads to better reading, and better vocabulary, spelling, and grammar.

Follow my journey as I implement a Reader’s Workshop in my sixth grade classroom this fall. I already use Writer’s Workshop to inspire writers, so I hope Reader’s Workshop will motivate readers to new heights.

It’s true, Mrs.Ulleseit. Most classmates I know, like choosing their own book with different genres. But not all people like book recommendations from others. We all like different genres. For example, I like fantasy and mystery, but I extremely dislike fairy tales. Others will probably like other genres and wouldn’t like a book recommendation from me.

Genres don’t matter to me. Genres don’t change the QUALITY of the writing – however, in the long run, genres do help decide perferences. For me, I do not care as long as it is not the dreaded Non-FIction, but I do enjoy Fantasy and Sci-Fi.

I agree with Albert. Genres only help choose what books you like reading.

That’s not true. I also like fantasy. If you like science fiction too, you should read Pendragon. I’ve been putting on all my replies that people should read Pendragon. I love the series so much. I know that your reading the first one because I recommended it. Do you like it?

I agree I love fantasy and Sci-Fi but my favorite is mystery. Since you have told me over and over how you love Pendragon I think I’ll check it out. If anyone finds any great mystery books please post them. I’ve already read two great mystery books and I am working on my third but iI would love to read more

Albert, although you hate non-fiction, you should try giving it a chance once in a while. As people get older, they change, and they might want to read a different genre. I suggest you should give non-fiction books a chance.

I agree with you, Anthony. Even though people hate different types of genres, if they read the genre they hate, they might start liking it. 🙂 So, I don’t read non-fiction much, but I don’t hate it either. Yes, you should give nonfiction books a chance.

I understand that Non-Fiction books are nessessary. They provide important details and information. However, they are not to my liking- I am a child, and children do not like informative articles that much(At least not sane ones)
    Robots are awsome.

I agree. Kids these days like to read books with action not so much information. This is why kids watch cartoons and play video games all day instead of watching the news!

i agree, not everybody likes reading about information but reading about action is a total different story!

My son always read nonfiction. He liked sharks. When he was in second grade he came home with a thick book about sharks and proceeded to put a bookmark in every page with a place he wanted to visit because there were awesome sharks there. 🙂

Are you sure your son is sane? I mean, enjoying nonfiction….Or does he just want to see people get eaten?

I agree with everyone. You should start reading non fiction. I know that I don’t like it and I sometimes read it because I have to, but if you chose a topic that you like, it might be actually fun.

I agree with what you say about reading because I feel that books that I enjoy are mainly recommended by people who have the same interests in reading as me.

it is very true Mrs. Ulleseit. i myself like choosing my own book but when i cant find a good book i will take recommendations from others. i like a good mystery, fantasy, or even horror! Which is big for me because i am not a big horror or fairy tale girl.

I believe that would be true about reading because reading more books will increase your knowledge.

I agree. Picking books in your genre would interest you and maybe
encourage you to read more. Reading more will let you pick up more
grammer, spelling, and vocabulary because you pick up what you
read. Also book recommendations help because people that have
read great books can recommend it to you.

I read books a lot. I am sure most people on this blog do. I just love reading books i man who doesn’t. Most books I read I get lost in the pages which I consider great description. After some lessons in school on Reading I notice a lot more things then I did before in reading.
    READING ROCKS!
