Novel Madness Again

The excitement builds in my classroom! We are down to our top four contenders for the the crown of Favorite Novel. Yesterday’s debates included commentary on the relatability of the characters, quality of vocabulary, genre of the book, and whether it had been made into a movie yet. Most students seem to feel that they can relate best to twelve year olds, as evidenced by Lightning Thief beating out Hunger Games, which has slightly older characters. Discussions about vocabulary included readability–if the vocabulary is easier, more students can enjoy the book. Most interesting to me was the debate over a book being made into a movie. Students seem to agree that only a good book will be made into a movie, but newer books, like Cinder, have not yet had the chance to develop a following. Overall I am impressed with how serious the students are taking this, how well thought out their reasoning is, and how much they are reading!

Here are the results of yesterday’s debates, with winners in red:

Maze of Bones by Rick Riordan vs. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J. K. Rowling

Cinder by Marissa Meyers vs. Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

Lightning Thief  by Rick Riordan vs. Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Matilda by Roald Dahl vs. Unwanteds by Lisa McMann

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s fireworks as we debate:

Maze of Bones vs. Catching Fire

Lightning Thief vs. Unwanteds

I am surprised with all the winners, for starters; I thought Hunger Games was going to win, after all, I did think it was a more famous and better book than Lightning Thief. Matilda vs. Unwanteds was a close call, they are both fairly good books with a great story line! With Cinder and Catching Fire are both really good books, too, but Catching Fire, I think, is a better book, no argument about that. So, I am truly awestruck by the winners, and they all were really great books!

Maze of Bones against the Lightning Thief will be pretty interesting. 🙂

I really can’t believe that the Unwanteds has gone so far. I thought we would lose to Matilda because I knew the people who were doing Matilda had great persuasive skills, and I also knew that Matilda was a great classic. Hopefully we get to be in the championship.

Thanks Jordan! I think you did really well last time!

Right now The Hunger Games is popular and I was surprised that The Lightning Thief won.

so many surprises i can’t tell who is going to win this time, but I’m betting that Maze of Bones will make it! Good luck, everyone, and may the odds be ever in your favor! 😉

I was also hoping Matilda would win, they did a really good job and if this was based on persuading(and not what the person likes to read, the persuading doesn’t really matter that much) Matilda would be in the last 2!

I am really surprised that Hunger Games lost. I thought that Hunger Games would win because of popularity. Now I think that the class, as well as me, is learning to vote for books depending on the debates. I thought that it was going to be a major problem, but it turned out okay. I am really interested in seeing how the next debates are going to go. Can’t wait to find out!

Yeah, I agree with you! I always thought that the championship would be~ Hunger Games vs. Maze of Bones. But now I know that the results are going to be quite different. 🙂

Unfortunately, popularity plays a key role in most elections. (

Yeah, I know. 🙁 Cinder is a VERY good book that I think deserves more popularity.

I was not surprised that Harry Potter lost because Maze of Bones is super popular in our class. I was super surprised about the Hunger Games out of the competition because many people are reading or read the hunger games.

I was so surprised that Unwanteds won! I was sure Matilda was going to win…The students who represented Matilda had really great counterarguments. I can’t wait to have Unwanteds go against Lightning Thief. I’m pretty sure that one book would only win by a few votes, but I still don’t know which one. ; ) I was a little upset when I found out that Eragon lost. It was one of my favorite books this year. : (

The debates have been very fun. We should do so more often! I like how everybody has different ideas about books. Especially the people against Hunger games since the book is great and practically has no flaws!(:

Those debates went pretty well for the most part. I’m pretty sad Matilda didn’t make it. It is such a good book, even though some might think it kiddish.

If I do say so myself, I think Maze of Bones should win, not just because I’m debating it, but it’s a really good book that our whole classroom has read. There was this one time where everyone wanted the book. This shows that it’s popularity went to an all time high.

I am so happy Maze of bones is in the finals. It deserves it. Every one is reading it.

i really thought that the top sixteen books were good. I thought the debates were good too. i also am surprised Unwanteds won. its a good book and all, but i thought matilda would win because of the how good they did.

Right now I think Maze of Bones is going to win over Catching Fire because Maze of Bones has more action and it hooks the readers in. It’s probably gonna win by 5-10 votes. Also, I’m not sure if the Unwanteds or The Lightning Theif is gonna win. Both are pretty good!

I’m extremely surprised that The Lightning Thief did not lose yet.

I was so suprised that the Hunger Games didn’t win. I was so suprised that the Lightning Thief won.

I lost against The Lighting Thief because I didn’t do a great job. I am excited to see the finals.

I think Lightning Thief would beat Number the Stars no matter who presented it, Andre. They are very different books.

I think Maze of Bones is going to win too. It’s popular book and people sometimes vote for the book they like best.
