I have loved to read since I was a child, and I’ve always been a fast reader. My mother used to take my brother and I to the library, where I’d check out four or five books. In two days, I’d have them all read and want to go back again.

Although I don’t remember receiving books as gifts for Christmas, every year Santa would put comic books in our stockings: Batman and Superman for my brother, Archie for me. We would read each other’s comics all day, leaving my mother time to fix the Christmas turkey without having to deal with us. Hmmm, maybe she and Santa were in cahoots?
I did get a book for my birthday once. Every picture of me for the rest of that summer shows me holding this book: Yertle the Turtle. It was clearly the hit of the 1960s. Did you get your copy?

Much more recently (in 2014), my husband bought Diana Gabaldon’s newest Outlander book. It came out right before my birthday, so it was a no-brainer for a gift. Part of the gift was an entire day with no kids, housecleaning, cooking, or interruptions so I could read it. Bliss.
Last year my son bought me a boxed set of the first three books in the Dragonriders of Pern series. This is a series I have read and reread so many times my original copies are falling apart. I immediately sat down to read these beautiful new copies.

So if I’m on your Christmas list, please remember that books make excellent gifts! Right now I am looking for a few copies of hardcover Outlander books to complete my collection and replace dogeared paperbacks. If you give me an Amazon gift card, I will always buy books. If you look at my Amazon wish list, it’s full of books. If you present me with a gift card for a mall, I will seek out the bookstore. Happy book shopping this year!
