Songbird, by Angela Fristoe, is more than a young adult romance. Dani is seventeen, haunted by memories of witnessing her father kill her brother. Since then she’s been in a number of foster homes. Now she’s found one  where she wants to stay. She even has a best friend, Reece, who wants more from their relationship. Dani is busy trying to handle memories of her childhood when some of those nightmares return to real life.

The core of this story is a young adult romance, but it is set off with Dani’s memories of seeing her father shoot her brother. That trauma haunts her, and colors every relationship she has. Then the past reaches out to put her in danger. I read this book in one sitting. The romance part was sweet, and the memories disturbing. I rooted for Dani from page one! Readers of all ages will enjoy this book, although younger teens may find the harsher parts emotionally hard.
